Don't Neglect Your Fridge

Two weeks ago in my Sort Your Life Out challenge I organised our pantry and gave you some tips and hints on how it can save you money! Another important area that need not be neglected is your fridge and freezer.

About four months ago I showed you a pic of my organised freezer. Over the Christmas break it really went to sh!t. Not to mention the fridge space which turned from organised and efficient to smelling like vinegary ham and had the leaning tower of plates with random left overs stacked every which way.
Our freezer meals have dwindled, and all that is left is prepped meats and lots and lots of frozen goods.

Just like with the pantry, cleaning and organising your fridge and freezer has the following pro's:

  • Being able to see what you have in your fridge and freezer can help you save money by not doubling up on items you already have
  • Making room for things you can stock up on when they are on spesh will save you money
  • You can easily see products so you will USE them instead of letting them go to waste, or remove them if they have expired to make your fridge a safer space to keep food

First things first. Take the items out of your fridge, and wipe down all the shelves and walls of the fridge with warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth (I used Nutrimetics OLC). Then you can begin sorting items and organising how they will be restacked into your fridge. Get out any containers or baskets that might help you with your space. Anything that is out of date or growing anything funky needs to be chucked.

Beware the trap of the Veggie Crisper! It can become where fruit and veg go to die.. Check out those mushrooms. Bleh.
I had a bit of help from my Mum and our close family friend and Tupperware dealer (it makes Tupperware sound like a habit, having a "dealer" and truly, it is an addiction). Mum bought me a set of the new Vent Smart Tupperware range for Christmas which not only keeps fruit and veg neatly contained in the crisper, but it also makes some fruit and veg last longer.

I keep deli meats in special Tupperware containers to make them last a little longer, and also to keep from having a stash of random plastic bags in this little drawer. I have also stockpiled a bunch of dips and cheese for impromptu entertaining. Most last for a few months as long as they remain unopened.
Another handy kitchen tip is to keep like items together - it saves time when you are prepping food.

School snacks and poppers are on a nice low shelf because when my step sons are here on school nights I encourage them to pack their own recess. The only thing I help with is lunch (and most Friday's we buy them a lunch order anyway).
The tiny shelf between this one and the veggie crisper is perfect for drink cans and beer bottles to lay flat.

Having a nice, clean and organised fridge puts such a huge smile on my dial. It is ridiculous really. By cleaning my fridge once a fortnight before going shopping I can keep it in this condition so my smile lasts on all year round.

Mum also bought me an Antarctica set from Tupperware for the freezer, but to be honest, the freezer is still a work in progress. I will insty a photo of that next week when it is done.

Does Christmas turn your Fridge into a warzone?
