Free Birds - Going Back in Time to Take Turkey Off The Menu!

am pretty easy to please when it comes to movies.

But this movie seriously had me cracking up.

Free Birds is a children’s animation all about Turkey’s and their involvement in Thanksgiving. When I say their involvement, I mean of course their role as dinner. It follows the story of Reggie (voiced by Owen Wilson), the clever turkey who works out that humans only feed turkeys corn to fatten them up for Thanksgiving dinner. He is rescued from his farm, only to be turkey-napped by a buff, deranged turkey (voiced by the ever hilarious Woody Harrelson) who says he is a TFF (Turkey Freedom Front) operative on a secret mission to go back in time to the first Thanksgiving to take turkeys off the menu!

Being that the movie revolves around an American holiday, if you don’t come from America it may be best to give a quick explanation to your kids about Thanksgiving if they aren’t already clued in on that particular subject. None of us found the American references overwhelming at all though.

I enjoy the silly comedy and the great banter between some of the main characters in this movie. Woody Harrelson’s character, Jake, (that’s spelt J-A-K, if you ask him) seems like an absolute loony who is cocky as hell and believes it is his destiny to fix things for turkeys for good. He has a serious clash with a fellow turkey who is just as buff and determined as Jake is. Their competitive (and almost identical) nature makes their antics pretty amusing. I have to say I was probably cackling harder than anyone else in the cinema.

Jenny (voiced by Amy Poehler) is a quirky yet strong female character in the story. Amy Poehler’s clever and sarcastic humour is perfect for this role; I especially enjoyed the dig at modern society’s priorities including pizza and T.V rather than “world peace”.
And of course, what is a movie without a classic love interest?!

This is a heart warming story about two crazy turkeys that may just alter the course of history. But of course, you’ll have to watch it to find out for yourselves.

These school holidays are a bit tight. Our bank accounts are feeling a little drained with Christmas only a few weeks behind us and after getting married and going on our honeymoon in October.  I bet a heap of families are in the same boat. We honestly wouldn’t have been able to take the kids to the movies if it weren’t for Telstra Movie Rewards. Telstra Movie Rewards means that any Telstra customer with an online account can sign in and get $10 movies tickets to Greater Union/Event Cinemas! The only time you can’t use this deal is on Saturdays after 5pm. So if you’re a Telstra Customer get online and book your cheap movie tickets to see Free Birds!
