Last Sunday we picked Aaron's two youngest up from their Mums house to spend the week with them. Today we dropped them back to their Mum's house. It was a pretty miserable drive home
It really isn't easy being a step parent. Trying to find your place in a family that has already been built. I love those boys like my own and make sure that they know they have my unconditional love, but spend my time acknowledging that they are not my own on an every day basis to make sure they know I support their Mum and that I will never try to take her place. I am here for them in whatever capacity they need me to be. But loving them like they were my own makes it pretty heartbreaking to drive away from them and know we won't see them for days. Usually, over a week.
So our car trip on the way home is generally pretty quiet. Aaron and I sit brooding and moody. We love our time together as a couple, but there is always something missing when the boys leave. It is one sombre 40 minute drive. That's for sure.
While I feel despair at their absence, they are probably having a great time at home with their Mum. It is important to keep in perspective that kids need time with ALL of their parents. That is what is in a childs' best interests. And it is selfish of me to want more time with them. It is hard for kids too to split their time between parents and feel as though they are showing all of their parents as much love in the time they can (speaking, again, from experience as a step kid).
Instead of focusing on the time that I am missing out on with the kids, I am focusing on the time we spent together this week (whilst also having a foot spa and catching up on the latest ep of PLL of course!)
Daniel felt quite sick at the beginning of the week so we spent a lot of time watching TV shows and movies, watching Jesse play video games and just lounging around in general. During all of this downtime I read a great series this week by Liliana Hart (head over to my goodreads if you'd like to see which books I read and what I thought of them).
Jesse went to Nan and Pops for the night and ate a whole pizza!
We saw Free Birds at the movies and I think I was chuckling harder than anyone else in the cinema!!!

I am not the kind of girl to do an OOTD post, partly because I only wear make up once or twice a week max and I rarely dress up |
A trampolining joint opened up near us recently so we went to Flip Out and they were bouncing off the walls (do NOT excuse the pun.. it was totally intentional).

Do you think I could get a clear shot of these two larakins?! They wouldn't stop jumping apart from water breaks!! |
When I got home from work on Friday night we cuddled up on the lounge and watched a couple of movies. I may or may not have fell asleep for a teensy little bit in Despicable Me 2 (although it is one of my fave kiddie movies of late).
Saturday was just too hot to be outside. I sat on our patio in the breeze sorting out some bloggy things for the coming week while the kids played video games and Aaron started his fantasy football season.
Daniel slept at Nan and Pops on Saturday night. Another pizza.. and scrambled eggs for brekky. Nanny knows the way to these boys' hearts!
Jesse got to pick ANY movie he wanted so we had a movie marathon of all the movies Daniel never agrees to watch haha

We caught up with my sister and my ADORABLE nephew today before taking Daniel and Jesse home to their Mums house. We went to the park and had an afternoon tea picnic. It's nice to see the cuzzies spending time together, even when there is a huge age gap between them all.
Finding Myself Young is a great blog running a 52 Weeks of Memories. This week's photo was "New". I bought these shoes the other day but I used to have a white pair almost identical when I was 7. I'm linking up over there so go check it out and get involved!!
I truly had a blessed week (although very worried to begin with while Daniel was feeling crook). I am looking forward to the last week of the school holidays when we can be together again, but I am going to try to focus more on spending time with Aaron and having "me time" when we don't have the kids rather than getting upset that we are missing them.
But no, it is not a "New Years Resolution"... I don't do those ;-)
I think your movie outfit is gorgeous - thanks for sharing! Those blue shoes are awesome too :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaz!
DeleteRubi shoes, 2 for $20. I am nothing if not a bargain hunter lol.
It is so hard when you have to take them home isn't it:( I love the way you write about the kids they need that love. Love those shoes.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is Eleise!! It sometimes feels like a constant inner struggle (as you well know)! Thank you.
DeleteAnd yes they are pretty amazing lol. My husband thinks I have lost all fashion sense!
